The Haters and Saints

We already had a discussion on different type of people we can come across in our day to day life but we haven't yet discussed about the haters and the Saints.

The Haters !

The people who hate something. It can be another person, a gender, a social norm or anything else. We have read a little Latin when we discovered 'Ego', 'Alter', & 'Verto' and now we can move ahead with a little Greek. The Greek word for 'Hate' is 'Misein' and is used in quite a few English words.

Misanthropist, Misogynist, Misogamist

Before we move ahead, lets first focus on little etymology of these words.

  • Misanthropist is derived from 'Misein' and 'Anthropos' where 'Anthropos' means 'Mankind'
    • From 'Anthropos' there have been numerous other words which have been derived like Anthropology (Study of development of Mankind or Human Race)Philanthropist (Opposite of Misanthropist) and obviously Philanthropy and Philanthropic
  • Misogynist is derived from 'Misein' and 'Gyne' where Gyne means 'Women'
    • From 'Gyne' there have been numerous other words which have been derived like Gynecology, Gynecological, Gynecologist all of these words are related to women.
  • Misogamist is derived from 'Misein' and 'Gamous' where Gamous means 'Marriage'
    • From 'Gamous' there have been numerous other words which have been derived like Bigamy, Monogamy, Polygamy. From these words, further we can derive Bigamist, Bigamous, Monogamist, Monogamous, Polygamist, Polygamous to represent the person and the practice
    • One important thing from etymological perspective is to understand how 'Bi', 'Mono' and 'Poly' have been used to represent 'Two', 'One' and 'Many' when coined with another word 'Gamy'.
    • Here one should understand that when we talk about Bigamy, Monogamy or Polygamy we are generally representing a practice where a man marries one or several marriages. But what in case of a woman marrying two or more men ? This is called 'Polyandry' where 'Andros' from Greek is used to represent 'Male'.
So etymologically if we derive the meaning of these words then the meaning is:
  • Misanthropist  means, someone who hates mankind
  • Misogynist means, someone who hates women
  • Misogamist means, someone who hates marriage
From these three words we can in not much time derive other words like Misanthropy, Misanthropic, Misogyny, Misogynous, Misogynistic, Misogamy, Misogamist

The Saints !

Greek language has given various important words to English language and when we talk about personalities we have got  'Anthropos', 'Misein', 'Gyne', 'Gamous', 'Andros' and 'Asketes'. We havent yet talked about 'Asketes'.

In Greek, 'Asketes' means 'Monk'. In English we have derived Asceticism and Ascetic from Asketes. In short we can define the modern English words as below:

  • Asceticism is a practice of being Monk
  • Ascetic is simply a Monk

What Kind Of Person He Is

In our day to day life we meet several people and out of those quite a few people catches our attention. Something is different in them. Either they appear really weird to us or they are comfortable to interact with. And Some are really Normal, a combination of weirdness and comfort.

Weird People?

Egoist, Egotist, Egocentric, Egomaniac

What is an Ego ? The word comes from Latin which means 'I'. So the one for whom 'I' is the greatest concern. This kind of people do not really bother about others and focus on themselves all the time. Then why different words for the same 'I' focused person ? Well, this is simply the strength of 'Focus' on 'I'. So the person for whom 'I' is a point of concern and he focuses more on that, then he is Egoist, and the he is having an Egoistic personality, but again if there is a discussion and he keeps on focusing about only his achievements, his accomplishments and all the things he did well and try to make others down by his arguments about him and others is an Egotist person and the he is having an Egotistic personality.

Egocentric and Egomaniac are again only differentiated in the strength or focus. One person who tries to satisfy his ego by making several decisions in his life if is essentially Egocentric. And the one who crosses all the limits to satisfy his ego is called Egomaniac. An Egomaniac doesn't bother about right and wrong but the only thing in his mind is the satisfaction of his ego.

Comfortable to Interact With?

Altruist, Extrovert

Some people live a life for others. They want others to be happy and make every effort to help others. They find happiness in helping others. These people are called Altruists and they have Altruistic personality and actions. Why Altruistic ? Lets read this aloud ! ALTER-istic.. So what is Alter ? Recall, when you get stuck up in a situation and you have to take a decision out of two options and one is not feasible, then what you say ? What is the Alternative. Right ? ALTERnative. So Alter means 'Other'. Someone who gives importance to others is Altruist, an another option is Alternative, an intense argument because of different viewpoint than that of the other person is called Altercation. a modification in dress to make it appear differently is called? Alteration ! Looking at the things in different viewpoint is ? Alternate viewpoint ! Simple.. Right ? Lets go ahead !

He is the life of any party. He is so friendly and is always cheerful. He loves making friends and doesn't bother much about his actions but does what his heart says and that too in a loud manner. Who he is ? He is an Extrovert. extroVERT ! Vert ? 'Verto', a Latin word which means 'To Turn'. So symbolically a person who is extrovert, is 'externally turned' or simply loves being open to all and someone who is 'Internally Turned ? Any guesses ? Correct ! He is Introvert. An Introvert doesn't like to speak much and is focused on his thoughts and only interacts if and when really required. Introvert people like a life which involves keeping a very less number of friends in circle and minimum of social interactions if and when necessary.

Normal?

Ambivert ? 'Ambi' means 'Both' thus making 'Ambivert' as someone who is little Introvert and little Extrovert. Most of the people we call Normal are Ambivert and rest can be classified into 'Introvert' and 'Extrovert' if absolutely necessary :)

Introduction

Hi,

First of all it has been great to see you visiting my blog. I hope you like it and if  you don't for any reason, then please do post in comment section so I can help you the way you want.

I have been reading several books and have developed a passion of reading whenever and where ever I get time. Though I am not a kind of person who literally forgets the entire world and just focuses on reading, but yes I definitely give attention to reading at least one to two books in a month, which makes exactly 24 books an year. I will try my best to keep the language as simple as it is to make sure we start learning a few words in a day and then gradually increase the level of writing so we can achieve our goal of few thousand words vocabulary in two months time from now on.

WE will be covering different topics in every post. So wish you all the best. Lets Start !

Regards
Manoj
